The man Elisa fell in love with, Pablo, was fighting for someone who wanted her father dead. I don’t know if it’s because I am the daughter of Cuban refugees or maybe because I don’t usually read romance novels, but I really could not get behind this love story. This is Marisol’s first trip to Cuba and while there she learns Elisa had a secret romance with a revolutionary fighting against Batista on Castro’s side.Īs Cubans we are conditioned to hate Fidel Castro. Because of this they fled Cuba during the first wave of exiles which were mostly wealthy Cubans before their properties were seized by the government. Elisa was the daughter of a sugar baron, so her family was very high on Castro’s hit list because of their wealth, power and ties with Batista. In her will, Elisa asked that Marisol spread her ashes in Havana. “Next Year in Havana” by Chanel Cleeton is about a Cuban-American woman, Marisol, who travels to Cuba after her grandmother, Elisa, passed. As a Cuban-American myself, this book has been on my must-read list for a few months now.
